Ebookers have always been a good source for me.

    LastMinute is also quite good.

air france, british airways and aer lingus have sometimes good offers.

off season aer lingus has ireland / usa flight like 99 $ + tax one way.

Look for a site that lists when airline 'sales' are held - then their price drops and the others often drop to match.

I fly out to SF every Sept/Oct to visit friends and see 49ers but never book it til the first week in July when BA reduce their fares (saved £150 this year).
Best suggestion is to get yourself onto Expedia or Opodo's fare tracker and keep a close eye on it.

Bear in mind that Expedia/Opodo have a booking charge (at least in the UK) so I often use them to find out which airline is currently cheapest and then book direct with airline without paying the Expedia additional £5-10 - plus you usually get some extra mileage perks booking direct.

Also keep a look out in the Sunday papers as they have deals with certain airlines every now and then - I just booked a trip to NY from London return for £168 inc tax with United and a Telegraph offer! Ipod Photo here i come!!
