Hello, I just picked up a new iMac and was really hoping to play this old classic. From what I've read it wont play nice with anything beyond Snow Leopard. I'm not highly technical but was wondering if anyone could offer up a solution. I have a copy of VM Ware Fusion but really dont want Microsoft within a hundred feet of my new rig let alone on the hard drive. I have a copy of Snow Leopard too. Could I somehow partition the HD and run it on SL? I would appreciate any help greatly.

You cannot run an OS older than the one that shipped with the Mac. Your Mac shipped with Mountain Lion so it can't run anything earlier than that.

It may be possible to run SL as a virtual machine.

The game presumably was created on the old PPC chip architecture, and so requires "Rosetta" to work. Rosetta is an emulation framework that allowed Intel Macs up to SL to run PPC code.

However, I think I've seen some website where people have managed to extricate Rosetta's components and install it on newer Macs.

Alternatively, are you sure there isn't a similar game that offers the same setup/environment/play?

Perhaps, I just always wanted to get back to this particular game and never really had a rig to run it. Now I do and it's too good lol!

If you're after 'old school' games brought up to date for modern computers, may I recommend "Oolite"?
It's a free, open-source modern implementation of the classic 80s space combat and trading game, Elite.
It's completely extensible, so you can add or alter ships, planets, missions, NPCs, and ship equipment.

C&C:Generals has 1.04 update, which makes it universal app ;) - It works on 10.8, and I hope it will on 10.9 . I think you can do that by copying DVDs content to /Applications and running patcher ;)

So are you saying a MAC version should run just fine? They seem to be a little hard to come by but I did see one on eBay.

Thanks you but what I love about C&C Generals is it's just straight up weapons of today for the most part. I can't get into many games that aren't simulation types.

Online server isnt supported anymore by EA, AFAIK, :) . You can play over LAN ( each copy must have different key, right now I can't verify it :( )

There's one disadvantage you should know about - You CAN NOT play with Windows users :(
