My brother has a mb. He just bought a usb external hd. I want to install xp on there using bootcamp. I thought i would be able to just select it, and windows could just run off of the hd?
Now that i went to install it, it wont let me install it on the drive, so i am guessing the easiest way would be to partition about 5gb of my internal hd for windows, and then what? I would also like to use about 30 gb for osx, so how would i do that?

One point that can't be stressed enough is that most of the heavy lifting in Boo Camp is done by the firmware, not the Boot Camp Assisant. Once your Mac has the ability to boot from El Torito bootable CDs (and any recent Mac can) you can install plenty of unsupported OSes without using the Boot Camp Assistant.

Another option for XP on removable media is the Bart's PE approach, which modifies the XP install disc into a Preinstalled Environment mode, which looks like very generic hardware, so you would not be able to get the full benefit of video acceleration in Boot Camp, but you could boot any PC or Mac with the same live CD.
