connect new MBP (TB3) to old 2009 Cinema Display (mini display port)

There is now this adapter Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. The Cinema Display works with Thunderbolt on my 2015 MacBook Pro, but I don't know if this adaptor is the solution for the new MacBook Pros. I asked the question via Apple sales chat and was told that it would but it was obvious that was a guess as when I asked further, the consultant had just "checked with my supervisor". If anyone knows for sure, please post here.
