Currently i have a HTPC, on which i use Media Centre.
I backup DVD's and BluRays to a NAS for playing through HTPC to TV and 7.1 surround amp. Sadly it sometimes refuses to play and just seems 'buggy'.
Backups are in both DVD rips (Video.TS) and .iso. I am thinking of ditching the HTPC and getting Apple TV. I believe that it will connect to surround (only 5.1) via HDMI and i will output from there to TV. I will have to re-rip or re-code all films to h.264 to play. Will i have to have a laptop running so that Apple TV can connect to ITunes (also means adding all movies to ITunes) or can Apple TV stream direct from NAS? What PC software is best for re-coding or re-ripping movies to appropriate file?
One thing that i like about Apple is that things just seem to work, if slightly more picky about how they work and what they work with.
Is there anything else i need to consider before HTPC finds its way for sale?
    Thanks
