When run under a standard user enviroment you can only read log files that are readable by that user. Is there any way to authenticate yourself as an admin from inside the application to allow you to read system.log?

    sudo more /var/log/system.log

You may need to add your user to the sudoers file in /etc which you will need root to do. If you have an admin user the su <adminusername> then sudo vi /etc/sudoers
