Control key popping out?

Should I be worried?

My concerns are that it might be too close to the screen and that I paid $1000 for a problem. Is there any way that I might be able to fix it without going to the Apple Store?

Well I seem to have found the problem, just no way of fixing it. The left button (control) has a more cone shaped nub, while the other keys appear to have the smaller, squatter nub on the right.

Could it be that the "nub" rather than being more cone-shaped is just not seated properly? Have you tried pushing it down further?

I've tried. Still making it sit higher than the rest.

Just take it into the Apple Store. If it's problem hardware, you're guaranteed a replacement.

Agree with the previous poster - take it to the Apple Store - that could definitely touch the screen.
