I've used mkvtools to extract and re-mux some mkvs and mp4s. 2 out the 3 I've tried actually worked great and look good on the ipad.

The 3rd one won't sync over. Can someone take a look at this media info output and tell me the ipad is rejecting it?

I'm not sure the ipad can handle high profile x264 video with 8 reference frames and b pyramid. You probably have to convert it to play on the ipad.

You might check out the Zumocast app. It's free and streams a transcoded version to the iPad from your computer. I discovered it today and am liking it so far.

Format profile : High@L4.1

This is the problem. The iPad only supports up to Main profile 3.1.

I have yet to find a quick way around this so had to resort to converting with Air Video or Handbrake.

The High@L4.1 is indeed the problem. Which version of MKVtools are you using? The newest version does a better job of changing the profile level, which needs to be 3.1, so you might want to give it a try. BTW, MKVtools will work with mp4 videos, so you don't need to reprocess the original video. Just passthru the video and audio with the device set to iPad. It should be a fairly quick process.

emmgunn,

Yes, I just upgraded to the lastest version of mkvtools and it's MUCH better than the old version I was using. The "add stereo audio track" checkbox rocks in that I will have a single file that'll play on both the ipad and soon to arrive in the mail AppleTV2.

I'll definitely be registering the product.

Thanks!

Hi Brian,
Just so you know, there is a bug with the dual audio that is preventing the ATV from seeing the second audio track. I've got the fix, I just need to code it. Hopefully there will be an update in a day or two.

FYI. Version 2.4.1 is now out, which hopefully fixes the dual audio track issue.

Emmgunn,

I just got my atv2 in the mail today. I ran a few mkv's through 2.4.1 and can't get 5.1 to work. Both tracks playback as 2.0.

My settings are:

video: passthrough
audio: aac5.1 (and add extra 2.0 track)
device: ipad

Should I select a different device type? I select ipad because I'm hoping that the same file will playback on both my new atv2 and my new ipad.

Thoughts?

I take that back. I just re-did one and select ac3 - 5.1 (and add 2nd audio track).

It plays back just fine in 5.1 on the new atv2!

Yay!
