Converting HD / Blueray

I am getting ready to buy a IMac or PowerMac, but not sure which one yet.

I want to be able to convert HD or Blueray movies, does anyone know what I should look for when getting a Mac.

Also will MactheRipper/Handbrake work to do the conversions?

No such tools exist on the Mac side. Some have reported success using a Win partition under Boot Camp, Parallels or Fusion and any number of the free ripping utils on that side. If you go that route and follow the specifications from the ATV web site, they should work.

I use AnyDVD HD for Windows on my Windoze Partition very good program. I also you use Free one but they look like crap.

I rip with AnyDVD HD then encode with Divx HD and use QT Pro to put in .Mov container and it plays in iTunes and ATV. Great Quality BTW

Which IMAC or Powermac should I get if I want to be able to use AnyDVD HD.

Should I be looking for any particular superdrive?

AnyDVD HD is WINDOWS ONLY as i stated in my post it is the only way. But get an iMac and boot camp to Windows.

If you are talking about a complete Rip from a Blu-Ray disc then assuming an average bitrate of 20 mbps (2.5 MB/s)and 120 minutes then you are looking at 2.5*60*120= ~18 GB.

For a 720p Rip, which still looks very decent, you can get away with a total file size of around 5 GB

Are there any software companies planning on making software to rip HD DVD's or Blue Ray on the Mac? I do not want to install windows on my MBP. I currently have an HD-DVD player and about 20 HD movies. Would love to convert them to Apple TV format.

Also, will the ripped content work on the Apple TV? I thought there was a limit as to the file size on itunes. Thanks!

Forgive the ignorance, but don't you have to have a blu-ray player/burner to rip blu-rays (in the instance, on your mac)?

I have a windows machine (As stated earlier) just for ripping HD DVD's and Blu-Ray Disc (I have both formats as i can get the best of both worlds).

There are no companies currently developing this software at the moment (To the best of my knowledge there isn't).

720p Rips get 4-5GB with compression into Divx HD you can get it down to 750MB-1GB then using QuickTime Pro you put it in a .Mov container or you could skip Divx HD and QT Pro and just use Visual Hub.

For 1080i/p rips they can be as big as 20-30GB (And sometimes bigger) Just use the Divx HD encoding and QT Pro save as .Mov and it down to a 1-2GB.

And both 720p/1080i/p work in ATV.

Edit: I forgot to say use Dr.Divx when encoding the Divx HD files.

I was wondering the same. Does your PC need to have a blueray drive to be able to rip the moves with AnyDVD HD?

Yes you need HD DVD/Blu-Ray for HD Movies (Perhaps it would of helped to read my post above you) It works with standard DVD's as well but doesn't upscale them.

I did read your post, but you never really made it that clear that you had a combo drive that included both.

Cool, you think it, but obviously I didn't. Not to burst you're bubble, but combo drives don't suck . I know you were referring to windows, I have a windows machine I was going to use it for.

I'm not in a Bubble is just rather have a separate drive for each as i can do one BD and one HD DVD at the same time as well as the drives being made just for that particular format.

How much did that end up costing? I can't imagine buying a blu-ray drive AND an HD-DVD drive just for ripping movies is a cheap alternative.

HD DVD $120 Blu-Ray $350. I rent all the HD DVD and BD's that i rip so the Drives have paid for themselves in about one month. The PC is a standard crappy one for $300 which i upgraded the Ram and Graphics card my self as to save money. I have a decent set up i think personally for the low cost.

I'm curious to know how you store all these files? Digitally? If so, I can only imagine the hard drive space needed to store them...

If you read my post above i compress so they end up at 750MB-1GB using Divx HD. And yes i store on my HDD

northy124 noted that with compression, the 720p rips take up about 1GB and the 1080p rips take up about 2GB.

Interesting... given that the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive is USB, I wonder if it could be used for this purpose if hooked up to my MBP in Windows?

As long as Windows has drivers for it, I don't see why not.
