I have to ask this stupid question because someone just said "don't get an iPod because you can only get music and content from iTune". I think they are just yanking me around because they found out I want to move away from PC and go to a Mac.

I have a bunch of CD's that I would want to rip and put onto an iPod. I do that now with my PC and put songs on my little Samsung mp3 player. Is there any reason (other than copy protection) that I could not rip my own CD's and put them on an iPod? I would probably have to use iTunes for tv shows, but I am not much for buying music through things like iTunes (YET).

All your CDs will work. Just make sure you rip them in iTunes. The only format I know of that doesn't work on iPods is Windows Media Format, which sucks anyway.

Yes, whoever told you that iPods only play purchased songs is an ignorant bastard.

That someone is talking bollocks. iTunes will rip your CDs to a number of formats, from bog-standard mp3 (playable on every digital audio player under the sun) to full-quality AIFF files.

All you need to do is set how you want to rip your CDs in iTunes Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing. I use 160kbps AAC. Then pop your CD into the drive, if you're connected to the net it will look up the album and fill in all the details for you and then you just hit "Import."

The iPod can play a great number of formats, not just stuff from the iTunes Store. Regular mp3 works just fine.

Go smack that person upside the head.

These clowns around me at work have been trying to yank my chain every chance they get since they found out that I am looking to switch from PC to Mac. Their problem is that they do not like what they do not understand. PC PINHEADS!!!

Yup, so if you have all the MP3s you created for your Samsung player, you should just be able to import them into iTunes, and sync away with your siny new iPod.

Also don't neglect to mention that the new Intel based Macs can run Windows XP as well as Mac OS X, so they are "PCs".
