Creative loses first battle in Apple 'war'

    They should have hired a porn star. ;)

    On the plus side, I do believe Creative sold more players overall than Apple sold gold minis, so, really, um, that's sort of a win.

    My little brother called me from college last night to let me know that he finally bought an iPod. The friend he took to the store with him said, "why don't you check out the Creative player?"

    "Because my brother would kill me."

    Creative does have something with their equipment. I'm not sure what it is, but they might try medication to make it better because their engineering staff certainly doesn't seem to be able to make it better.

    If you consider how most of the players work, they're concentrating on specification sheets, not usability. How great is something if all the features in it only work in a mediocre fashion?

    Creative's financials bear that out. They offer many things and concentrate on nothing, unless it's pricing. They seem to work as if they're the only company making a product, as when they started, and it's not helping them. Talk is cheap, action is tough.

    And $100 million spent on advertising without achieving the goal. Ouch.

    PS, Time for MacRumors to get another rack of Xserves :)

    I was thinking the same thing ^_^. Now everyday feels like a macworld keynote day.

    I would click the ad banner at the top of the page before I posted this, had Safari not complained that it was a zero byte resource.

    Anyway, back on topic:

    Creative, or any other company, can't beat the iPod on specs alone, or even specs and price. If you can beat the iPod on usability, however, you may not need to beat it on specs or price - that is the key.

    Considering most of those were low end, especially flash based, I wouldn't even give them that. ;) Shuffle is going to pretty much kill what little sales they might have had.

    It's propably too late for that. Maybe if you beat iPod on usability and looks, you might have a slim chance.

    well, DUH they couldn't beat the ipod in a single quarter. But, they did have half as many sales? That would seem like an increase in market share... and at least a larger portion of the market than I thought they had. I mean, compare that with apple's market share on computers, and the effective "war" declared by jobs a few weeks ago (not in rhetoric, mind you, but in released products)... and we would KILL to have as much success in the windows war as creative has in the ipod war. It's a war of attrition, so momentum one way or the other matters a whole lot more than actually being ahead.

    That was flash players--a market Apple wasn't even IN. And apparently, it's about 1/3 of the overall player market. Apple had nearly all of the 2/3 that is HD players, and it looks like Creative did well in the 1/3 that is flash players. But the sales they took, therefore, came from other flash makers, not from Apple.

    And now Apple has a flash player...

    When do you think we'll get an update on numbers sold..next quarter? With digital downloads set to explode, you'll need some growth to keep dominating market share...I just hope Apple can supply enough units.

    Next quarterly financials will likely project 2005 fiscal year unit sales. I think Steve will give us an update at WWDC.

    I can definitely forsee the day when Apple needs to add more manufacturing partners.

    That doesn't make sense to help with PowerMac shortages, when IBM has to few chips.

    That doesn't make sense to help with iPod Mini shortages, when not enough compact HDs are being made world wide.

    And that doesn't help when the constraint is only due to a rush of initial demand--because when that demand has subsided, you have a lot of wasted money spend on unneeded production capacity.

    But it DOES help when component shortages are a non-issue, and when demand is expected to STAY high.

    I suspect that may be the case with the iPod Shuffle and Mac Mini, if it turns out Apple can't keep up. Time to add more manufacturers or plants if that happens.
