Some of my favorite quotes from the town meeting (which I didn't attend, but saw on the news)...

Yes, I can see how having 75 gay athletes in town to use the lake will cause AIDS cases in Crystal Lake to skyrocket.

More time to stay home and watch "American Idol" I guess.

Well, at least someone with their head on straight.

i saw this on the news. one interviewee said her issue was that the games excluded non-gays and it should be opened up to anyone.

she wasn't very adept at hiding her bigotry.

What she meant was "If I support this then my parents will find out that I scissor fight with other women..."

    Bah! Googleymoo!

Yes and her fact-checking was bad too. It doesn't exclude non-gays. Anyone can participate. That's OK- f*** them. I don't need to go to Crystal Lake and spend money either.

They should have it in Oak Park; the birthplace of Hemingway and home of Frank Lloyd Wright. Besides, doesn't Crystal lake have a problem with ski-mask wearing, mechete wielding, resurrecting serial killers? :p :D

I don't have a problem with this as far as sexual preference or "family values". It just sounds silly...like having "Black Games" or "Fat Games".

Maybe at one time it served the purpose of helping promote gay awareness, but it's a quarter of a century later. Is there still a rationale behind it, or do things like this now seem like an artificial "separation" between gays and straights?

Moreover, does the name of the games unintentionally give it a sexual connotation? If I think about something called the Heterosexual Games, well, it kinda sounds like something I might wanna bring my video camera to. ;) :D

On the other hand, these people! --

Riiiiight.... That first woman is a bigot, sorry...and the second one should only find that their most cherished child is in fact gay. Probably devastate them.

Anyway, whether the event itself makes sense to me or not is of little consequence. If they wanna have Gay Games, let 'em be. They're not hurting anybody.

Umm- the games are open to ANYONE. They were started to promote awareness and understanding between gays and straights.

Crystal Lake? You think they'd have bigger problems with Jason Vorhees running around killing naked camp counselors.

in all seriosness though I find it interesting that people think they can make allmost any comment by starting out with
    "I'm not racist/sexist/homophobic BUT...."

Hell if you are any of those things atleast have the stones to stand up and be proud of it. You shouldn't have to sugar coat your opinions just because their not popular.

They were in Amsterdam in '98 and will be in Köln in 2010. There are also gay rodeos, in the US at any rate.

That music sounds sort of kinky :D

as far as i know, leekohler is right when he says the games ARE open to us heteros. at least in team events. until my friends tom and josh split up, i was playing on their football team. so were three of their other straight friends.

and yeah, "please don't call me a biggot, but insert biggoted nonsense here". what a shame.
