ok, big problem here. upgraded to panther (from 10.2.8) and backed up data on dvd's. problem is my wife is a different user and while her "documents" folder copied over to the disk (and i can see the folders and files) the folders were apparently "read only" and won't copy back to the hard drive. they're scrambled(?) i originally thought the dvd was damaged but that is not the case. it's permissions.

question is what to do now.
    1) i could try to use diskwarrior to rebuild the available portions of the harddrive to retreive files (but i installed 10.3.3 on it)
    2) her documents really want the old operating system. i have the "library" and everything else from the old os backed up except the "system".
    3) any other ideas?

your help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, do a Get Info on the DVD and check "Ignore ownership on this volume" if it isn't checked already and try copying the files. If it complains, try using her account to copy her files and your account to copy yours. If that doesn't work (or some of the files copy but others don't), make a read-write disk image of the DVD using Disk Utility (or Disk Copy, if you are on 10.2 or earlier), make a note of the permissions that are giving you trouble, and temporarily change them to something that will let you do what you're trying to do. Change them back when done; just to be on the safe side, repair permissions (using Disk Utility) when you are done.

hey thanks but still no luck.

    - "get info/ownership & permissions" on the volume only says "you can only read". no opportunity to "ignore ownership" available.

    - her account (and mine) technically don't exist anymore. i've upgraded to 10.3 and erased the hard drive during installation

    - using disk utility to create a read-write disk image stops midway(when it arrives at her files?) and gives an error message.

On my copy of Panther, the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option is there - it just might be hidden. Try expanding the various tabs and sub-options with disclosure triangles - trust me, it is there somewhere. To expand a triangle, just click on it - it will point down and anything hiding underneath it will be revealed.

i know exactly what your describing and folders on my hard drive the "details" sub-option is there. this is a written dvd however, and under "ownership & permissions" there are no sub-options.

It may not be located under "Ownership and Permissions". Like I said, check ALL of the various pages of the "Get Info" dialog for it. I'm not at my Mac right now, so I can't tell you exactly where it is located.
EDIT: I'm back at my Mac now, looking at the Get Info page for a burned DVD. This is what I see:
