Should anybody buy now?! Or wait til the next deal?

The 20% off ends Thursday! What do you guys think? Will it continue? Or should we pick one up before they go back to full retail?

If you want to buy now, the 20% is a decent discount. I'd personally hold out for at least 25% since it's not at all uncommon.

How much would you get it for with the 20% discount?

(I'm too lazy to check. :p)

When do you need the monitor? Dell has pretty regular "specials", about once every 3 months or so. And, FWIW, the projections for the LCD panel industry is that prices are supposed to come down, as more production comes online this year... I don't know exactly WHEN that is supposed to happen though.

I'm also in the market for a Dell LCD (have my eye on the 20.1 1600x1200), and I passed on their recent discounts. I'm gambling I can do better down the line. But then, I don't need it immediately anyhow, so I can afford to wait a bit. If worst comes to worst, I'd pay about $150 more than I would have with the discount... not a tragedy in the big scheme of things. I wouldn't wait months for a $30 cheaper price, but if I can get it for $200 off the listed full price, well, that would be worth it to me. Bottom line, figure how much it's worth it to you to wait, and what is the timing of your monitor needs. YMMV.

I'm waiting. I think I'll have trouble paying more than $400 when we've seen them go for $333 or so.

i have that same problem.. I have seen the 24" go as like as like 719... So i cannot justify spending an extra 100+ $ on it..

The 2405FPW going for < $800 is exceedingly rare. If you can get it for < $850, it's a great buy.

Okay... But as far as what this thread is about. What do you think? Should i purchase one now or wait to see if they announce the 2007FPW and the 2407FPW and see of the price of the 05's will go down?

I don't see the 2405FPW price going down, I see it being replaced with the 2407FPW. For me, I already own a 2405FPW and am thrilled with it. It does everything I want it to and more, and enthusiastically recommend it, at any price point up to it's listed retail price. It's worth every penny.

It really comes down to what you want vs. what you're willing to spend. If you want a 24" LCD, you will not go wrong buying a 2405FPW in the $850 price range. Yes, you may be able to get a better price at some point, but there is no telling when. Dell seems to like to run better specials over the summer and for back-to-school, but that's a ways off.

It is not a issue of money, it is will i need 24" of space. I would like the higher resolution, but right now i think i am going to have to settle for the 20". Once the 2007's come out do you think the 2005's will drop in price? Or do you think they will just stay the same price but with the new tech?

Because from what i have read, the Video card will now have to have HDCP, which no retail one will, only OEM...

What changes are expected for the 2007/2407 models? I haven't read much on the upgrades.

To the OP, if you need that much space, you could always consider a pair of 20's for the same price (almost) as the 24".

how do the dells compare to the mac monitors?
i though the 850 price for the 24 is pretty sweet , i like the mac 23 , i just dont know if for my purpose its worth the extra $500

Just order the 2405FPW from for $879 shipped, then when something else better comes along, no matter how long its been, just return that monitor to Costco and get a full refund no questions asked.

Basically it supports DRM and is required by Windows Vista(tm) to work fully

I can't imagine it being worth it for ANY purpose, personally. The Dell's are pretty widely considered to be on par, or perhaps slightly below the ACD's for picture quality, but they also have more functionality (ports, etc) to make up for it.

Um. Ok. What's DRM  Will a mac take advantage of it, or is it a windows benefit only?

I tried looking on the Dell 3007 page to figure this stuff out, but didn't see much explanation for the new technology.

    DRM=Digital Rights Management

As of yet, HDCP/DRM/etc. has not been linked to anything regarding existing Apple hardware/software (except DRM on iTMS music and video downloads).

Microsoft is VERY big on the copy protection deal, especially with their media player and related files. This doesn't surprise me.

For what it's worth, I bought a 2405FPW this week. Got it for $844. If you go to ebay, you can buy a $35 off 300 coupon for Dell for like $1. I bought that coupon and applied it to the 2405FPW to bring it under $850.

Can't wait to get it! :)

Actually, the iMac Core Duo and MPB both mention that the video card and mini-DVI support HDCP passthrough.

EDIT: Hmm. They did mention that, but it seems to no longer be there. Odd. Must have something to do with this.
