iOS devices in brick-and-mortar Apple Stores around the world are running playable demos of Nintendo's highly anticipated Super Mario Run from today, December 7, for those eager to get an early taster of the new game.

The announcement was made by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime on Wednesday evening's The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, during which a playable version of the company's upcoming Switch console was also shown.

Super Mario Run is Nintendo's first major attempt to crack mobile gaming and is the first of many titles planned for the platform. Driven by its iconic character, the game is expected to generate millions of dollars in revenue for the company. Engadget has posted a remarkably positive hands-on of the free runner title for anyone interested to learn more.

Super Mario Run is set to debut on the App Store on December 15 for iPhone and iPad. The game will be a free download with a $10 in-app purchase required to unlock the full content.

The game will be coming exclusively to iOS, at least at first, playable on the iPhone and iPad. However, according to a Kotaku report, Nintendo may be planning an Android release in 2017. But Windows users will likely never see the game on the platform.

Is anyone really excited about this? There are plenty of "run" games with overly-simplified controls available right now on the App Store... I guess I just can't get it up over something like this ESPECIALLY for $10.

I am excited because this is a real Nintendo made game utilising IP they are very protective of.

Super Mario is what games should be like on iOS.

Currently iOS is filled with half baked dough that's aimed to pick pocket iTunes user's wallets. So much trash games, trash casino rubbish, trash gems, trash be a celebrity rubbish etc on iOS. Super Mario will usher in a higher level of game quality. Let's hope more developers embrace the spirit of Shigeru Minamoto in their work as well.

Steve Jobs would have loved Nintendo coming to iOS.

Nintendo thinks about
DESIGN. They experiment and try things. Sometimes they miss the mark, but sometimes, they really get it right, so right on. Nintendo markets their new ideas, and thankfully they don't let the market develop their ideas like a lot of companies do. That's what I love about Nintendo. They go with the gut.

Wonder if this will sell more than the Wii U.
Unfortunately it most probably will. Shame really, as the Wii U is a very underrated console. Lots of great Mario games on it, ironically.

Nintendo always said the game was coming to iOS "first" in time for holiday season in 2016. An android version will probably debut early 2017.

It's funny how people complain now about paying $10 for a game that will probably be quite fun to play, and knowing Nintendo will have hidden depth to it to master. Nintendo isn't going to make a simple endless runner where all you do is swipe up and down and repeat. Yes the premise of the game controls are simple swipe gestures, but if you've ever played a Mario game or Nintendo game in general, you'll know there'll be hidden secrets and fun things to discover. And best of all it's $10 with no IAP. Or would you rather keep buying life packs of 5 for $3.99 or wait 9hrs before your lives are back?

I think most of you assume we are all gamers. A lot of us are just casual gamers. So no $10 is not going to break my bank. But, $10 for a game in which the novelty of it being a Mario game will where off in a few weeks?

I think those of us who are casual gamers might think it is cool to be playing Mario on an IOS device. But after a few weeks it would just be another game you downloaded that you don't really play that often. Does that make sense?

Oh, I agree. I just couldn't possibly justify spending $10 on software for my $850 phone. Money doesn't grow on trees, you know. /s

In all honesty, if this is truly a quality game, I welcome the price (any iPhone owner can definitely afford it). If it does well, it could encourage other big name developers to really invest in making great games for smartphones and not just boring cash grabs that you'll only play once and then forget about.

Yeah I understand what you're saying, and in that case if you're a casual gamer who enjoys the freemium or 99c games that get played a few times and then deleted, $10 for Mario might seem excessive. Still, from my understanding the game will actually be free to download and it's $10 to unlock all the features of the game, so casual gamers can try it out without buying anything.

The Wii U's hardware is great, but it never had the software to justify the purchase. I did buy it, and I think I regret it.

I bought it assuming that it'd get a main series 3D Mario and Zelda. Mario never came at all. The Zelda got delayed until it became a simultaneous release on both Wii U and Switch.

Running through the list of games that I got for it... Yoshi, Star Fox (Guard is vastly better than Zero, just BTW), Rayman Legends, Kirby, Pikmin, and Toad.

I tried the demos for Mario Maker, 3D Mario Land, Splatoon, and Hyrule Warriors. None of them were appealing - I didn't waste my money on the full games.

The best games I got for it were probably the Metroid Prime trilogy (just $10 - I'd already played all three when each was new, but the series is so great and $10 was such a bargin) and Fire Emblem. Kind of sad that best games on it were just downloadable virtual console titles.

I'm hopeful that Nintendo knocks it off with having two platforms (Wii U and 3DS) and puts all of their developers to work making titles for the Switch. Hopefully they won't have another console that only gets 1-2 good games per year like they had with the Wii U.

Sure, everyone with an iPhone coughed up $850+ for our phones at one time. /s

I'm just not convinced from the footage shown that it's going to be this amazing experience that we have to play.

Sure, I'll download it and try it out and see what's what but it's going to have to win me over. I'm just not that excited for it.

So is this going to be most profitable mobile game in history with over 20 million signed up to be emailed about it. Here in the UK its 7 quid so well over a hundred million from a mobile game ? Wow
