Different color icons for iTunes?

iTunes versions 1-3 changed the color icon each time. That was pretty cool. But version 4 and 5 stayed the same-- maybe a hint that version 5 was to be really short-lived? (Never seeing a 5.1, just a .0.1)

The icon on Apple's site is still the green, iTunes icon of ages past.

Anyone else wonder if it will change again, and if it does, what color it may be?

Maybe the icon colour will change again when we finally get a new version proper, y'know, like with some new features and stuff.

not going to change. the green icon is now KNOWN to be iTunes, its branded into people's minds now, and is in the Windows world too. i dont see them changing it.

Who else is surprised that they already abandoned iTunes 5? it was out for what... 2 weeks? I don't see anything that could merit an entire digit change... maybe a 5.1 upgrade at most. All that we have different is some iTMS aspects, correct?

Over two 'full' versions? Not really, no.

Most of the items that you've mentioned are related to content at the iTMS, which is something different in my view. There are a number of oft-requested improvements that Apple could have made to either iTunes 5 or 6 - gapless playback, for example - but for some reason neglected to do so.

Agreed. Gapless is my personal pet peeve, but there are plenty of other music features that would be nice (new smart playlist options, 'push' streaming to multiple other computers simultaneously a la Airport Express, etc). My fear is that Apple considers iTunes' music features complete, and thus adds all these little frills and iTMS things to justify updates.

If we can't have gapless, then I say we petition to bring back the blue-note version of the icon. :D Unless, of course, that means they'll be sued by BlueNote Records.

5 weeks, actually. ;) Funny, I was just looking at some old posts from late 2003 talking about imminent iTunes 5 features. Huh. All that buildup and it lasted barely a month.

Right. This was a 5.1 update at best. Seems that somebody felt that the '6' would help hype things up a little more...

That's what it's all about. Apple can't shift their new content unless people download the latest version of iTunes, and if they don't shift their new content, they're less likely to sell their new-content-enabled iPods.

What better way to entice Windows users into downloading than to release a full version upgrade?

Agreed...why not just wait for this to be iTunes 5? In any case, it may simply be because we're getting close to 2006 and thus, iLife 06. Consistency, schmonsistency.

I think it has more to do with what Brize stated with the new content and really 'forcing' people to download the new setup to they can push their new content. A lot of people look at minor revisions as optional and therefore do not download them right away or at all depending on current app stability and the added features.

I think calling it 6 was a way for Apple to push the idea that this is a new thing, something we all need
