I would appreciate your advice on this: I bought my iMac g5 (see sig below) with 1GB of ram installed by apple. Now, if i get a 1gb module (say, from crucial), and replace one of the 512mb modules, do you think that I am going to experience any performance problems?

    Thanks a lot!

What sort of stuff do you use the iMac for? In Activity Monitor, how much Inactive and Free Memory do you have in the System Memory section? :)

I was more thinking about the two modules not working together well.

But since you asked, right now I am writing something on TeXshop. Dictionary, jabref ,safari, and, amazingly, Football manager 2006 are running too. Activity monitor says I have 49MB of free memory. Hard academic work you see.

There shouldn't be a problem adding memory, but it might not be worthwhile. OSX memory management is strange and complicated. To work out how much spare memory you have, add the Free Memory with the Inactive Memory.

I have the same machine as you, use it for quite a few different intensive tasks but I wouldn't benefit form getting more than my current 1GB. I even have the spare slot (I opted for the single 1GB chip) but I still wouldn't bother upgrading mine just yet. :)

No immediate plans to upgrade, too. The mac is working fine as it is. I was on crucial's website and just wondered how the upgrade would work. Thanks again!
