Hi guys, after much consideration I believe that I am ready to make the switch to Macs. I have been toying with the idea for a while now, and then that damn iPod Halo effect got me!! :p I just can't figure out what to get.

I'm in my Senior year in college, but planning on going to grad school for Psychology. Most people would recommend an iBook, but I'm leaning towards the 12 inch PB. I don't do much photo/video editing, but that could be because most windows programs that I've come across are a huge pain in the @**; iLife seems very intuitive. Also, the 32mb vcard in the iBook scares me. I thought 64mb was the bare minimum to run apps smoothly nowadays.

Assuming there is an update to the PB soon, I'm sure that any of the now "discontinued" models at the apple stores would get marked down. A couple questions:

1- Can you get the edu discount on "discontinued" model prices?

2- If there is no additional edu discount on the disc. PBs, which is likely a better value: disc. 12in superdrive PB or 14in iBook?

    Thanks in advance!! :)

I don't believe the Apple Store's educational discounts apply to the refurbished section :)

Usually discounts do not apply to the prices of a refurbished unit. There are sometimes additional discounts available on a discontinued model. The only way to check is to look at the appropriate pages and see if they are discounted. Also, remember you can't do a BTO on anything but the current models.

You'd have to compare the video processor of the models you're looking at and you would have to decide if the bulk and weight difference matters to you.

And finally, go down and look at the screens of the units you're considering. For some people, the 12" screen is too small for the 1024x768 resolution.

Oh, I actually forgot about the refurb models. I was actually refering to the PBs that they have on hand at the Apple Stores right now. I'm fortunate enough to live kind-of near one. :D I wasn't sure if, when they mark those models down, the edu discount would apply as well.

As far as value, I just mean the amount of technology for the money.

    Thanks again!!

No, you can't get an edu discount on discontinued products, even if they are still new in the box. It only applies to current products. However, Apple always lowers the price on old models to less than the price would have been w/ the edu discount. So since a 12" PB is $1399 edu, the discontinued model will probably cost $1349.
