Hi. Is anyone else having a problem with Software Update? I've gone to check for updates for the past few days now, and everytime I do, "the application Software Update quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected." I've reported it and have even restarted my computer several times, but I still get the same message.

Additionally, after I restarted my computer, the only resolution that was available was 1440 x 990. Usually there are more. What's the skinny with that? Again, I've restarted my comp several times, but it continues to be the only resolution available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That doesn't sound very good. When was the last time you updated successfully? Do you remember which updates were installed?

The first thing you should try is repair permissions on your system drive. You can do this in applications/utilities/disk utility. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest starting your computer up in safe mode, which will run a number of scripts wich could fix whatever may be wrong automatically, and if you're using an eithernet connection-you should be able to update.

Are you experiencing any other issues which may be related to this problem?

what machine do you have, and what version of the OS do you have?

you should be able to download the latest update from apple's site i believe, if that helps at all.

How could I forget? Thats right. Here's where you can find the *downloadable* updates:

    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

See if one of those fixes you up. If it doesn't, I'd still suggestion following the steps I outlined above. Something is wrong if you can't update normally.

Ack. I just tried downloading the updates (Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo PPC) from their site, and I restarted the computer after it was downloaded, and now I'm getting just a blank blue screen. It was showing earlier a black screen which was asking me to enter a password. I didn't enter anything, and then it said something about a "child." I really have no clue...

I have an iMac G5, and it runs (ran?) OS X Tiger.

I don't have the Apple care plan, which sucks. I wanted to purchase it, but at the time, I was too poor.

The last time I did a successful software update was probably a week ago. Maybe less than that.

My main concern is I have several photos on my computer which are very important to me. I hadn't gotten the chance to backup these particular photos onto disk, and they're no longer on my digital camera. Even if something has infected my computer, is it possible to still have those photos salvaged? For instance, if I remove my memory cards or whatnot, (I'm not really too savvy when it comes to computer technicalities), is it possible to put that into another iMac and have all my photo, video, and music files saved?

I'd really appreciate all your help. I hope I can have this situation taken care of.

Thanks. I tried, and actually, more problems have ensued. Do you know if it's possible, even if my system is screwed up, to salvage files by removing hardware (e.g. memory, hard drive), having it placed into another comp, and then restoring it that way?

I have an iMac G5, with Tiger.
