One annoyance I've had with Mac OS since I started using MobileMe to sync my data a while back was that applications such as Contacts and Calendar wouldn't update if they weren't currently running. This meant that every time you opened these apps they would have to refresh. If you weren't connected to a wifi network, they wouldn't be up to date.

Because of this, I usually keep apps like Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Reminders always running on my Mac but hidden. This is annoying because even though they aren't doing anything they still can affect the CPU usage and battery life on my machine.

I have no good way of testing this myself but I was hoping someone else might. Does anyone know if apps like Contacts and Calendar now update when they aren't running?

Thanks to anyone who can provide info on this matter!
