    Hey you! A new website was launched a few days ago that I helped out with. The purpose is to promote stop motion animation and encourage people to keep animating, or more importantly, get people who have thought about trying it out to start. It is not a contest, though there is voting and deadlines. The current event is over on Oct. 31st, and then we will announce the topics for the next round.

    If you have any interest in just viewing some fun and creative short films (all under 1 minute) Check it out. Also if you might want to participate CHECK IT OUT. I made one of the entries that is there so far...the one with the animated shoes.

    Hope you like it!

    Very cool - I might wait for the next event to try my hand in it - but just using my mac and a dv cam, what's the best way (software wise) to grab frames?

    For OSX and a camera the best framegrabber is framethief

    I encourage EVERYONE to try it out. It's fun! I'd say more, but it's been a long week and I gotta relax.

    Just wanted to add, that the best place to go if you have technical problems is stopmotionanimation.com and then click on 'message board' at the bottom. There's a great mix of amateur and VERY VERY seasoned professionals there. We've have posts from some top stop motion animators all the time, once Ray Harryhausen posted through another member when they were together. Lots of great info there.

    Carry on...

    Teabgs,
    Do you know how thay did the "play" feature in the gallery (QT seems to load silently in the background and then you have to hit "play")? Apple uses the same technique on their trailers page and I remember seeing a thread about this here but i just cannot find it anymore.... arghh i sometimes hate the forum search capabilities.

    Tx!

    You need to make a one frame quicktime movie that has a link to the real movie all in an <object> .... </object>

    Here's the source that they used on that site, but you should look at other source files from Apple and other sites that use this technique to see how its done elsewhere..

    Code:
    <object width="320" height="195">
    <param name="autoplay" value="false">
    <param name="controller" value="false">
    <param name="target" value="myself">
    <param name="href" value="movie_to_play.mov">
    <embed src="one_frame_play.mov" width="320" height="195" autoplay="false" controller="false" target="myself" href="movie_to_play.mov"></embed>
    </object>

    Here's one from Apple - you see they do a few things differently...

    Code:
    <OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B"  WIDTH="480" HEIGHT="376" CODEBASE="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab">
    			<PARAM NAME="src" VALUE="http://movies.apple.com/movies/qt_posters/qtstart5_480x360.mov">
    			<PARAM NAME="controller" VALUE="false">
    			<PARAM NAME="target" VALUE="myself">
    			<PARAM NAME="href" VALUE="http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount_classics/illsleepwhenimdead/illsleepwhenimdead-sref.mov">
    			<PARAM NAME="pluginspage" VALUE="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/">
    			<EMBED WIDTH="480" HEIGHT="376" CONTROLLER="false" TARGET="myself" HREF="http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount_classics/illsleepwhenimdead/illsleepwhenimdead-sref.mov" SRC="http://movies.apple.com/movies/qt_posters/qtstart5_480x360.mov" BGCOLOR="FFFFFF" BORDER="0" PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/indext.html"></EMBED>

    yay teabgs...this is supernice, I'm gonna be looking by that site in the future...
    "my left shoe" is really well made (and very funny), but i guess he's practically a pro that guy... I also really liked "lost soles", just because of the strange sense of time it gives when you do stop motion w the clouds and sun as the background, don't think i've seen it like that before...

    :)

    A

    btw - what's up w that shoe theme?!

    "My left Shoe" was done by Nick Hilligoss who is an awesome Aussie Animator. he's not practically a pro, he IS pro.

    whats up with the shoe theme is that for each quarter we're(there's 4 of us doing this) deciding on a theme. there's a choice, some random object, or an emotion, and then you build upon that to create a short stop motion film. I just animated some shoes because I only had one sunday afternoon free to do everything for my entry, so I animated it and put the sounds together within about 7 hours. I'll hopefully have something much better for the next one (I think the entry deadline is Jan 1st) but I just wanted to get SOMETHING in for the initial trial run.

    Mr.A, thanks for fielding the source code before!
