And before any goes crazy and calls Bush war monger for doing this, this legislation is sponsored by two democrats.

I hope it comes with suitable loopholes for rich white kids to exploit...

This bill apparently disappeared in committee in February 2003.

It's right there in the record that you posted. It went to the Subcommittee on Total Force in Feb. 2003, and it's still there.

I see what you are saying...Yes it is in subcomittee, but that does not mean it is dead. Not by a long shot. hr163 is slated for the 108th session of congress, which we are still in.

Not only that, but John Kerry/Edwards accused Bush of wanting to instate the draft.

If anyone's actually read the Rumsfeld Doctrine, you'd know that the draft is the furthest thing from it.

Remember Vietnam: Johnston (D) instated the draft and Nixon (R) got rid of it. It's not, nor has it ever been, the republicans who wanted the draft, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, but everyone seems to like him so ignore that...

The Republicans wanted to nuke them instead

Not that I agree with the republicans or especially Rumsfeld, but anything that criticizes republicrats always gets my stamp of approval :D

Nah, this was a scare bill, it's not going to come out. The committees haven't done a thing with it. Notice the distinct lack of loopholes, no college exemption or anything, just for high school up to 20 yrs.

A little bit of background on this bill here.

It seems to have played out its purpose in making a point :)

The most obvious qualifyer as a "scare bill" is the striking of sexual references in the Selective Service system. Drafting young women guarantees the death of the bill.

Cheney said no way to the draft.

So it's probably going to happen.

Edit: Could just be a tactic to keep us out of war. If there's a draft, we might actually think twice about invading other countries (yeah right). Not like those in power won't find some way to get their kids into the National Guard and get an honorable discharge even though they didn't even show up for their cushy, non-combat jobs anyway.

But if you strike drafting of young women doesn't it free up lawsuits for sexual descrimination for any drafted young man?

    Just a thought.
