I'm trying to back up movies that I have. I have both Region 1 and 2 movie. I can only switch the Superdrive four times? That's pretty lame. I understand there's no way to change this.

Is there a decent DVD drive (doesn't have to be a burner) that I can purchase and use to rip the movie and then burn it with the Superdrive? Would this work?

    1. depending on your mac model you could use VLC player which bypasses the region crap and allows certain drives to be region free for playback

    2. Grab MacTheRipper 2.6.6 from the net - its free. Run the program and it rips the entire contents of the DVD to your HD and takes away region protection & macrovision protection

    3. Using Toast 7 or Popcorn simply create DVD from Video TS folder. Toast/Popcorn will then allow you to choose either the entire disk or main feature and recompress if needed to fit on a DVDr adn then burn it for you...

All done.. No need for an external drive at all...

    Hi. Thanks for the info.

I have Mac the Ripper 2.6.6, but still, when I load the DVD a message comes up saying that the DVD is not of the region that I currently have set. It gives me a choice of switching (below it says how many times I have left to switch)....then if I choose no (I don't wish to switch the region) it ejects the DVD.

Can I somehow bypass this so I can try Mac the Ripper or Toast?

you have auto DVD player kicking in. go into system preferences/CD & DVD and choose ignore when inserting DVD.

I did disable the autorun feature of the DVD drive. However, when I try to run Mac the Ripper, it doesn't work properly. It takes a while for it to read the DVD and when it does it goes through the ripping process slowly. The it completes, but with bad sectors. Is there something else that I should be doing or do I have to switch the region of the Superdrive?

It is the DVD, try a different DVD. Also it should still run even if it comes back with bad sectors.

I don't think it's the DVD. I've tried two of my Region 1 DVDs (with my Superdrive set to Region 2) and both take a while to load in MTR 2.6.6 and then finish with bad sectors. After I create an image of the file in DVD2One, I am not able to load the image file.

Is there some setting in MTR 2.6.6 or in Preferences that I'm missing? Or is it just not possible to rip a Region 1 DVD properly with the Superdrive set at Region 2?
