I have a few Region1 DVD's (I am in region 2) and have to slightly change the settings on my DVD player to watch the region 1 discs. It occurred that I could make region 2 discs with DVD Backup, DVD 2 One X and Toast on my Powerbook 17", but it will require changing the region setting on the Superdrive.

This is all ok, but I do not want to run out of changes. How do I reset the region change counter? Will resetting the PRAM do it?

The counter is stored on the drive and the manufacturer can clear it. Users are out of luck. The whole reason why the counter is there is to prevent people from buying discs from other regions.

This site should have everything you need to get it to work. Region X will allow you to change the region encoded on the DVD Drive. Region Switch puts a script in your startup scripts so that it will switch regions automatically for you, and the reset utility resets how many changes you are allowed to make.

    Two drawbacks though,
    1) First you have to update the firmware on your DVD drive. (the site has instructions on how to do that as well).

    2) The site's owner is in "semi-retirement" so the programs may or may not work under panther and your macs DVD drive may not have an updated firmware patch to allow Region X to work.

Other than that, the utilities work great. Good Luck!
