My Lacie External drive started beeping today. A quick googling informed me that means likely my drive is dying, but right now it'll still mount and the data can still be read off it. Running Disk Utility on said disk simple reports it is fine.

Being past its 1 year warranty, I openned it up to see if there was anything nice like just a loose connector. The drive, which is a barracuda has always had this awful whine when it spins, but I stupidly never talked to LaCie about it, so I was just wondering if there's anything else I can do to fix this drive or if I should try to copy the data on it over asap.

Oh one more thing. If it really does die, is it possible to swap another HDD into it? I was thinking of upping its capacity to 500 from 250, as it has the nice firewire 800 that many cases don't have.

    Save data NOW.

Yes, I believe they can be replaced but I would be a little wary about size changes in case the power / cooling (Hey I know next to nix about this stuff) become an issue.
