e-mail does not work on iPhone 4S - claims wrong username or password

    I have tried multiple times to try to set up my gmail and my work email on my phone 4S but it doesn't work. with the gmail account i keep getting the same error message:

    "the username or password for 'imap.gmail.com' is incorrect"

    the work e-mail just never works and keeps asking me to reenter my information. I already tried this solution and it did not work:

    I have been on hold with apple for 28 minutes now.

    Can anyone please help me here.

    same issue, it will work on pop if you go that route.

    I stumped the genius bar. they couldn't come up with a solution. we tried a second iphone and it had the same email issue.

    I proposed the idea of turning off the 2-way verification on gmail and that worked. I got email now. Stoked.

    Same problem here: receive/no send

    All settings same as with iPhone 4.

    Found a fix for mine...

    When going from 4 to 4S, you have to enter 2 passwords:

    Incoming Mail Server is one the first mail account page, the one where you can toggle the account On or Off.

    Scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server .... see the arrow to the right?

    Clicking it brings you to a SMPT page, where you can activate one or more outgoing servers by clicking on, for instance:

    smtp.att.yahoo.com
    or
    smtp.gmail.com

    and entering your password again for that account.

    Account will be verified & voila! :D
