i am a hardware side geek who dabbles in programming

what does anybody know about eclipse? is it hard to learn? is it useful, or fun?

...i am just talking on the hobby level since i prefer to stay on the hardware side of things in computing (that's my day job) and fear that a lot of programming/development jobs will be ported overseas...and i am in no mood to try and compete with billions of people who will work cheaper than me, work longer hours, and who are much better programmers than me ;)

also what other languages are up and coming and worth consideration?

I could be wrong, but the only eclipse I know of is an IDE that is developed open source and backed by IBM. It is pretty much a text editor that allows plugins for different tools, compilers, etc.

It is not its own language, but probably supports some sort of scripting.
