hello:

is there a set of dates related to the support lifecycle of el capitan? specifically, i am interested in when the os will no longer receive security updates.

any help is appreciated.

Generally speaking Apple tends to continue providing security updates the previous two versions of OS X. Assuming that trend continues El Capitan should receive security updates for another 2 years from now.

Looks like Apple cut off Mavericks a tad early....Even though Sierra has not been released, Mavericks 10.9.5 did not receive the latest security update.
