While helping somebody with their eMac I discovered that System Profiler lists the Serial Number as "-", i.e., just a dash.

What causes that?

Thanks! It's not a serious problem, but it's a little awkward when you want to identify it without having to hunt for a serial number on the case.

...And if you replace your HDD. It happened to me when I changed the HDD on my MacBook Pro. Changed the stock to 500GB, now I don't have a serial number within OS X.

There is an Application that Apple released which allows you to list your serial number back into the MLB info again.
