I have an Ext Drive ( Windows NT File system format ) and in the trash is a file that refuses to empty. The message is
The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in ' -------- ' cannot be read or written. ( Error code -36)

I have tried
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/ but even that cant empty it. Any suggestions please.

The Mac OS can not write (it can read) to a NTFS formatted drive unless there is 3rd party software installed that enables writing to NTFS drives. The action of trying to delete a file requires writing to the external drive so there is the problem if it is in NTFS format.
