Why the hell should the Palestinians have to recognize Israel's right to occupy their land and treat their people like dirt?

If it forces Hamas to the negotiating table with Israel's new progressive government it's a great move.

However, history makes me sceptical. Not only that it will, but whether the parties would agree on anything even if it did.

It's okay. When these sort of questions come up, it's standard practice to blame France

I thought the Israelites started it when they began their terrorist campaigns against British rule.

Another round of Good Terrorist, Bad Terrorist™ I guess.

    This is disappointing.

Unfortunately, to the West, Israel can do no wrong ( virtually ).

    Pretty sad state of affairs.

Only if Palestine had plenty of oil... the west would look at Israel very differently.

Skunk - that was short and sweet- and absolutely spot on!!

Nothing like an overly simplistic view. The Palestinian Authority is a major source of employment for Palestinians. Doctors, teachers and all other employees will go without pay much less without the medicines and tools they need to do their jobs. This will force them into begging from the west for basics like food and clothing. Is that humanitarian?

It would be great to separate the Authority from Hamas, but there's no mechanism in place to do that.

The sad thing is that Israeli criminals are getting off scot free.

Why should they accept a great and continuing injustice? If that's the kind of democracy you want in your country, that's up to you, but to expect others to waive their rights to justice in exchange for aid is obscene.

They should accept it if they want our money. You call it injustice. That's your opinion, not the view from the EU's point or America.

As long as that government is supportative of Hamas calls for violence and the distruction of Israel, they will have to live without support from the EU as well as America. They don't like it, they don't get the money. It's up to them.

i note that, because we elected bush twice, al qaeda makes no distinction between those in government and the rest of us: we're all open to being blown up.

so you and UBL have something in common.

The reason the "aid" is given is to try to mitigate the terrible conditions Israel forces the Palestinians to live under. The fact that Israel is refusing to pay over $55 million a month in taxes, which belongs to the Palestinian Authority, makes it all the more necessary.

Hamas' views were quite clear to the voters before the election: should they now abandon their electorate?
