I have the same problem, and I have the same computer. I can make Excel crash pretty easily simply by copying a cell and switching the application. But the maximize screen thing brings the whole computer down. I just thought it was an Excel issue.

I haven't tried this on my Mac Pro at home, but I just confirmed it with my MacBook Pro. It grabs all keyboard and mouse inputs, and essentially makes the machine useless. The machine continues to run (I had a music player in the background) but you have no control over it.

My suspicion is: if you have incoming SSH connections allowed, and have another computer near by, you could SSH into the Mac and kill Excel. I'll try that later when I get home, assuming I can get Excel to lock my Mac Pro up.

I'm pretty sure this is an MS problem, not an Apple one.
