Ive got an external HDD that wont mount. It shows up in disk utility, but its not mounted and thus not on my desktop. I try to repair it, it freezes disk utility, and i even try to erase it, and it just sits there doing nothing.

    Thanks in advance

    Does Disk Utility freeze immediately?

If not, then maybe you could try to erase the disk (not the volume), and then try to partiton it.

it doesnt freeze immediately, though it does take about 10 minutes to "gather disk information"

it freezes when i try to erase or repair both the disk, and volume. I have tried both, and it just beachballs for hours

another thing, dont know if it matters, but system profiler does see that it is there.

okay, so it finally erased it.... crapy thing is that... well it erased it.

so I just lost a lot of stuff that I didnt really need but I wanted

I use this drive for jun stuff so it wont take up my space for stuff I actually need on my computers HDD.

Anyway to recover what was on it do you think?

Well, at least you got it working again...

Maybe FileSalvage can help you get the data back.

Okay so it recovered everything.... but before it will let your actually have the files back you have to purchase that program for $90.....
    soooooo......
I remember that symantec used to have a file recovery thing back in the OS9 days, and I get symantev anti-virus for free from my school.... is the data recovery still on there?
