What are the possibilities for using external monitors with the current G4 iBooks? I've heard of cracks and things... but do these let you use it in closed mode? Or is it only mirroring or dual display modes available?

From stock, vga adapter will let you mirror your desktop.
Using a hack such as screen spanning doctor you can extend the desktop into another monitor.
I have used the "hack" (which is really a firmware workaround for the disabled extended desktop if I recall), it works pretty good, I just DO NOT recommend using the hack to enable clamshell mode as the iBook vents heat from the keyboard. If you use clamshel you run the risk of melting things in your screen area.
BTW use the hack at your own risk as it is NOT endorsed by Apple and theoretically can void your warranty if it messes your computer up.
