I have an internal SATA HDD that I would like to use as an external. I've been searching the internet for a SATA enclosure that would preferably connect to my Mac via firewire, and so far I can hardly find anything... I can find tons of enclosures that support IDE HDD's, or SATA-compatible enclosures that only connect via USB or through a SATA cable (which I don't really understand, wouldn't that defeat the portability and convenience of having an external drive if you have to pop open your Mac every time you wanted to connect the drive?), but I can find hardly anything that works with SATA HDD's and connects with firewire... Basically, I found one that is way too expensive:

But this is the only one I've found... am I way off base here? Why is this so difficult to find? It seems like it should be fairly common...

Any insight would help me a lot. Thanks!

Have you checked macsales.com? I'm pretty sure they have SATA enclosures. They might be USB only though, so check that out.
