Facebook yesterday announced the launch of a standalone iOS app that lets users of the social network directly access its "Events" features, which the company says have more than 100 million daily users.

Today we're announcing Events from Facebook, a new app we designed for event seekers who are passionate about keeping up with nearby events and finding things to do with their friends. Whether you're looking for something to attend this weekend or just wondering what's happening in your area, Events will help get you there.
The app offers a feed of events that are created or followed by users' Facebook friends, including any updates to events that users have confirmed they're going to, as well as those promoted by any commercial pages they follow.

Events can be searched based on time, location, and interest, and upcoming events can be browsed via an interactive map. To keep track of events, the app also offers a calendar view, to which existing Google and iCloud calendars can be added, so it's easier for users to make plans.

Facebook events is a free download for iPhone and iPad from the U.S. App Store, but availability in other regional stores remains patchy as of Saturday. [Direct Link]

I'm getting sick of getting that "Not available in your country, change store." message when trying to download a newly released Facebook app.

Finally! I've wanted this exact app for several years now. I have no desire for the regular FB app because I don't post or need to read what everyone is doing. I use FB mostly for events with friends and to discover what is going on in my area. This way I can still get notifications on my phone for event updates.

While I agree with comments above, the app is well made, it looks good and very easy to use which is very important considering Facebook's audience.

+1

And not only that - Events and Messenger ar imo the most important and useful features of Facebook. There is this common misconception that everyone on Facebook is to share their entire (fake or not) lives. It's probably true for some/many, but A LOT of people (including me and most of my friends) use it primarily as an awesome cross-platform direct/group communication and event organising/coordinating tool.

Yes. The entire point of allowing you to upload your existing calendars to Facebook is to make it easier for the user to make plans and is not simply there to make it easier for Facebook to data mine every aspect of your life.

Yawn.... Why not make a "Super App" like their Chinese counter part WeChat???? Facebook is no longer a trend setter, they are just trying to keep up...

This could be added to the main app but they want to have more access to your phone. No thank you.

They need a standalone poke app
They need to just bring back pokes. Those were the days... Only college people and getting invitations to events in which people said yes in fb meant yes on real life. Plus all the photos and tags of said parties from people. Now it's all lockdown so people/companies don't do crazy stuff w my social life.

Cool! I love when a company breaks out their product into millions of ridiculous separate apps. They need to have a Friends app too, exclusively for adding people. Then they can release their new Pokes app, just to manage your pokes. Also they need a new app for their marketplace, and a separate app for your wall would be a great idea too. They can have one called Status, where you just post your current status and nothing else. All of this would ensure users have nothing but apps from Facebook on their phone and provides a much less confusing, better experience.

Not falling for this. Deactivated Facebook already though.
Simply not an app for you. Doesn't really mean much one way or another for anyone else.

If it's anything like Facebook's other apps, expect this to be discontinued in a year.
Messenger has certainly stuck around.

This is great news.

Just last week, I was wondering when I'd get to download another Facebook app to fill my entire first screen with Facebook Apps. I wasn't sure what was coming but knew I needed another app. I was kind of hoping for a Facebook Notifications app so I would be finally able to see ALL my notifications from Facebook in one place. Then I could decide which app I would open first. Maybe we'll get this app early next year.

The only other app I am really looking forward to is Facebook Groups. Then I won't have my main app cluttered with group talk and all that can be another separate app.

Truly a thrilling day!!! I am so glad I woke up today.

Facebook events in my experience were used as spam to promote nightclubs. Any social events I really wanted to attend I didn't even want to respond to invite requests because hey then people I didn't want to know I was going would know.

I can't see the appeal of having Facebook know you life and the details of your physical whereabouts.
