Family sharing…

Okay, please take me through this from the beginning. We have a family of five, all sharing the same Apple ID. It's getting weird though. We have all of our phone settings off, yet we're still getting each other's phone calls.
From what I'm reading, we can have one ID for purchases, and have our own accounts for calling, iMessage, mail, etc. I tried setting it up, but once I get to adding family members, I'm stuck. Do we all need our own apple account to start out with? Please help, I'm a little lost.

You each need your own Apple ID. Then using family sharing you can assign one of those IDs as the "payer", but all purchases within the family would be accessible to all accounts that belong to the family.
