The recent threads on Ikaruga and Shadow of the Colossus/Ico got me thinking.

Some games, like the two above, don't sell particularly well, and seem to fall under most people's radar, but both have very passionate supporters and almost have cult status amongst some gamers. Another one I can think of is Rez, for the PS2.

I know we've already had a favourite games thread, but a lot of that was the usual suspects (Zelda, Half-Life, WoW etc) - all good games, but I'm quite interested in the lesser known, non-mainstream games.

So, what are your favourite cult games?

I like the one where we all chase the chicken round and the one who catches it gets to kill it drink the blood and then choose which virgin to sacrifice while wearing the old goats-head hat.....oh hold on, you're talking non-mainstream video games. Nevermind, forget I said anything:eek:

    Ninja Gaiden on Xbox....

Think that gets a shout, it was a poor seller but it does have a very large cult following from ninja gaiden fans, not to mention it is a great game,

Depends which version - 1st one on the GameCube - definitely, sequels on other systems, perhaps less so, but still an excellent game. :D

I think so. Another criteria for cult games seems to be quirky gameplay, which definitely fits the bill here.

    one phrase describes my favorite:

All Your Base Are Belong to Us.

ZeroWing is at once brilliant and one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. you can play it for an hour and you hit one little thing and you die and go back to the beginning! it's infuriating!

I enjoy Caslevania: Symphony of the Night for the PSX. It's a very rare game and definately has its own following. Simply the best Castlevania game ever.

Katamari Demacy, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and Mr. Mosquito are others I enjoy as well.

I love Katamari Damacy. I'm not to big on the sequel...the original just did everything right and all the gimicky goals of the new one (such as the firestarter, underwater, rolling up the Sun, the stupid lightning bugs, and the clouds) are all either boring or relatively frustrating. The one exception is the sweets one where you uncover a picture. I can 100% that one every time anymore. The first, though, is just the better game.

Oh, and Penny Arcade today reminded me of another: Moonbase Commander

Don't know about the cult status, but the original Master of Orion still holds great therapeutic values for me... ;)

Wow, so many come to mind....

Since everyone is saying Katamari Damacy I suppose I will join in with that one. But we have left off many, well here are a few of my favorites...

    Sonic Adventure
    Zelda
    Phantasy Star Online
    Shinning Force
Perfect Dark(does that count? should just go with GoldenEye I guess)

There are more, but this is what comes to mind right now.

Sonic Adventure sold well. And it sucked. So that's why I didn't mention it. And it's been remade and re-released, so I also excluded for that. :D

Anything Zelda has been a huge commercial runaway success. That eliminates it.

As for Shining Force, hooyah...another that should be on the list. Especially Shining Force III, as it got killed by the Saturn. *sob*

Are any of those really CULT? They all sold very well enough and in some cases were major releases on their respective systems (perfect dark, zelda).

    I go for

Ico. Animal Crossing. Giftpia. Beyond Good & Evil. Rez.

Tony Hawks GBA? they were pretty much just tech demos when the GBA was launched and then they stopped selling as well. which is a shame because I really liked THUG GBA.

Not so much cult but indie, Eternal Daughter is an okayish platform/adventure game. its PC only but quite good. not as fun as Metroid but it was only made by a few guys so its understandable.

oh and Turrican. few people have heard of it. well it was semi-big on Nintendo & Sega machines but I'm talking about the vintage Amiga versions which were just too good. I was so obsessed with it as a kid :)
