I bought an iPod 3rd gen a couple of days ago. Is it possible for the Firewire cable to freeze my iPod when it's syncing? Maybe even the port? The only way I can sync now is to use USB, but it won't charge on USB, and the previous owner didn't give me a wall adapter for the Firewire.

First, bumping after 15 minutes is juvenile and annoying, and I almost didn't reply based on that.

OK, so newer iPods (for the last few years) don't really support FireWire and you are lucky if they work at all - I know my iPod Touch doesn't.

As for USB, if you have a proper Apple sync cable, it charges through the cable on any proper USB 2.0 computer port.

OK, my friend, if you looked at the time, I started the thread at 10 PM and I bumped 12 hours later, 10 AM. And that's not what I asked. I asked about syncing, not charging.

Apologies on the time change, but bumps are almost always bad netiquette anyway.

And as far as I could tell:
    - Firewire was freezing up
    - USB would sync but not charge.

So you seemed to be asking about *both*. And as I said, there is *no reason* why USB shouldn't sync & charge. And FireWire isn't supposed to be supported on newer iPods.

If it's a 3rd Gen (which he states it is) then Firewire is fully supported.

I've had three 3rd gens in my life, and the two that had this problem have all had dying hard drives.
