Yes, MacBook Air can do those things just fine. Keep in mind that MacBook is cheaper, faster and has twice as good battery, not forgetting an extra USB too. Low-end MacBook Air also has 4200rpm hard drive which is painfully slow thus if you can, get the high-end MBA with SSD.

Currently, I don't find MBA being a good deal so personally, I would either wait for an update or get a MacBook (Pro)

For your movies, if you still need a DVD drive, you would probably be better off with the MBP. I personally believe that physical media is dying, and the legacy inclusion of optical drives is disadvantage to most current notebooks. However, some people still have a legitimate use for optical drives and for them, moving to MBA would be problematic.

Personally, I have left optical (and most other physical) media behind. The recent advancements in networking infrastructure have enabled its demise.

Maybe the macbook pro is a better option for me .

The macbook air with SSD cost 1700 € or something like 2100 $ .(in France) .

The macbook pro with 250gb cost 1100 € and i think later it's possible to replace this hdd by one SSD .

Are the 4500 rpm's really so slow ? (for my practice ? )

720p on YouTube will also be an issue unless you have the Beta Flash Player.

As for value, it depends on what's important to you, portability or spec chasing?

The half an inch and half a kilogram difference between the machines is quite noticable.

2.0GHZ Core 2 Duo is required to run 720p and 1080p video offline, i recommend the base model MacBook Pro, which should be more than enough for your needs, the MacBook Air is way too outdated, but if you really want the MacBook Air then wait for a refresh, and i believe all the MacBook Air's except the 1.6GHZ model use a 5400RPM HDD

How do you do it, just using Quicktime? I presume you are running HD Movies bought off the Apple Store? Because i cannot, no matter what i do run 1080p MKV files, in either Quicktime X/7 or VLC

Unless you're willing to wait for an update to the MacBook Air, I wouldn't suggest you buy it either. It's just a bad value right now, as it hasn't really been updated since October 2008. In theory and use, it's an amazing Mac but the value is terrible.

I wouldn't push you into a MBP either though. I would say wait and see if the MBA gets an update in the next month. But whatever you do, go with an SSD.

If you do wait, I think you could be rewarded greatly. I really think the potential updates to the MBA could make it just as capable as a MacBook which is all you need.

    Good luck.

Man speaking from personal experience, the MBA is a pig when it comes to playing 720p video. I knonw my rev and and rev b MBA were able yo play flash and silverlighy for the first 10mins but the video starts to stuffer after that and nearly unwatchable. I'm bitter with the MBA experience afte spending 2100 on it and not being able to do the basic things that a $1000 computer could do with it's eyes closed. Stick with the regular mb or Mbp IMO. Better battery, better heat control, better processor, better memory, better capabilities, and for a lower price. You are goingyo be pissed off and disappointed with the mac experience if you bought a MBA IMO.

Who knows. Some people say it's able to play HD video fine, but all I know I spend $1700 for the rev A and $2100 for the rev B with ssd, and it's absolutely rediculous how ****** it performed my personal experience.

    http://www.h264info.com/clips.html

go down the page until you find a 1080p video, once it downloaded i just scrolled my track pad to it and pressed the little play button in the middle of the icon, then put it to full screen, it runs perfect for me. I will say the battery life is not good though.

High quality Flash videos may struggle in fullscreen but that's because of poor Flash for OS X. E.g. Apple trailers work fine

i recommend clicktoflash it works great for flash videos. also with the flash beta its not that bad on my macbook air 1.6 ghz so i bet the mbp handles it just fine.
