there is a way to change the default checkpoint
i think it is 15 mins by default

are you using the console version of the client?

It just means that it's saving the intermediate results when it arrives at the checkpoint. In this way, you don't lose all of the work since the last whole percentage--i.e. if it takes 30 minutes to complete a percentage and you have checkpointing set to 15 minutes and it crashes at 28 minutes, you'll only lose 13 minutes, not 28.
