I tried TextRangler by the makers of BBEdit, not fond of it. :p
SubEthaEdit is good but it doesnt have tabs(and is pay only).

What are some good free editors? :)

Well... TextWrangler is the best one out there, IMO... if you don't like that, well I don't see which you would like... :p ;)

SubEthaEdit 2.2 is still free, if you can get it... but the new version, 2.3, is no longer free (like you said).

What do you want to use the text editor for...? That might help people suggesting appropiate editors for your use... :)

    I highly recommend Smultron.
    Feature rich open-source text editor.

TextEdit ships with every copy of MacOS X. AlphaX is a feature-rich app. Search VersionTracker.com and MacUpdate.com for others.

I've never tried these but I have heard of some apps called OpenOffice or NeoOffice.

What kind of text do you want to edit? If you are brave, you could try Emacs (http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/EmacsForMacOS).

Right, if you're looking for more office-like features out of a text editor, try out NeoOffice:
