That's "MC" Solaar... and he's very good. I also like the group IAM. I think you can find their cds on Amazon.com (although pretty expensive, as they're imports).

Not totally rap, but Serge Gainsbourg is pretty well known & entertaining. I usually get a good laugh while listening to him. :D

y'all need to check out Les Nubians latest album "One Step Forward." Talib Kweli (who's a great rap artist) is on there and its pretty cool.

Back on the subject of French rappers: You can hear IAM on this track by Khaled. He's an Algerian pop star that's popular in France. IAM does some guest rapping (in French) on the song. Unfortunately, you can't hear them on the 30 second iTMS clip. However, if you want to hear what they sound like, it's only 99 cents.

(BTW - The whole Khaled album is most excellent.)

i got a cd by a group called manau for a gift once. "panique celtique". i never would've bought it myself and didn't like it at first, but it grew on me and now i really enjoy it. give it a try. it's a good couple of years old, though.

Check out Baaba Maal's album "Firin' in Fouta" (which isn't in iTMS - they only have his acoustic albums). The song Swing Yela has some rapping in his native Pulaar language.

I discovered a few more recently:

113 (French/Algerian; not to be confused with 311). I love their song "tonton du bled". They often show the video on Link TV.

Daara J - great Senegalese rappers, my current favorites

Racines - I love "bisso na bisso" which samples "Ay chona la" by Youssou N'dour.

I think my boyfriend and his friends used to listen to some group called NTM... not bad. And yes there is French rap, just like there is also Viet rap, Chinese rap, Korean rap, and I'm sure all sorts of other rap-- and believe you me, French rap sounds a great deal better in my book than Viet rap (no offense to any Viet rap- listeners out there).

:edit: I just verified: some other groups they listened to-- IAM, NTM, oneshot

well if you're gonna bring serge into this...i have to throw in my french recommendation:

France Gall...especially the "1968" album. frenchpop at it's best. and don't tell anyone but i've lifted some really cool samples off of this. ;)

My latest french rap discovery is a group called Explicit Samourai. I'm completely addicted to their song "Le Roseau."
