Exactly what I've been saying about third party games for a long time. As the development cost has increased experientially in the last few years, expect to see most of the big name third party games go multi-format. For the 1 single reason.. cost

I still expect titles like MGS4 & Devil May Cry to go multiformat sooner rather than later.

Which makes first party titles all the more important.

Used to I would have been excited to get it on the 360...but now with Crackdown GTA doesn't quite seem the same :) Probably will still pick it up. Would have been fun if they had a bat and the Wii mote though...

GTA4 is like Halo to me. They have fantastic series that could so easily be messed up (Halo 2 story, GTA:SAs horrendous bugs). I just hope its coming to the PC.

No PSP redesign? Oh well. They could at least do a Nintendo and quietly slip in a better screen, a la SP.

Please drop the price of the PSP, Sony. I want one but the few games I like aren't worth $200 for the console.

I think they could still pull that off if they wanted to...although my screen is good enough and I'm not having any problems with it ghosting or anything.

Well at least the fella from sony told it real....PS3 base is not big enough yet to sustain the expense rockstar is putting into GTA4

The two live exclusive downloads sound pretty cool for it...they said not just adding a player or two, but hours of gameplay. Sounds fun. Glad games are finally doing this...I remember talk of a cd rom for my 64 that was going to add this kind of feature (buying one expensive cartridge and then buying cheaper disk upgrades)...they've kind of been doing it, but I'm excited to see what the "hours of gameplay" will turn out to be.

"SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire has confirmed the platform holder's intentions to release a redesigned version of its PlayStation Portable handheld.

Speaking yesterday afternoon at the national launch of Sony's PSP in Education initiative, Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists that the current PSP is just the "first iteration".

In line with the firm's strategy for previous consoles, a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.

Responding to a query on Sony's plans for redesigning the system, Maguire added that any changes to the industrial design would not affect the size of PSP's screen - widely seen as one of the system's key strengths - which is "fixed". He did not offer any suggestions as to when the new iteration might be released.

A reworked PSP has been rumoured for months, but this is the first time a Sony executive has gone on record to confirm the company's plans. Aside from a reduction in size and weight, Maguire did not suggest any additional changes to the hardware.

If the cost of components for the reworked PSP is less, the machine itself could also carry a lower price tag. It currently retails for GBP 179.

Cutting the size and cost of console hardware has been standard practice for Sony since it introduced PSone in 2000, five-and-a-half years after the Japanese launch of the original PlayStation. The slimline PStwo launched four years after PlayStation 2.

Following the PSP in Education event, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that while there are no "immediate changes" planned for the handheld other than new firmware updates, "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development, and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

No date but it could still happen.

So we could be talking about the difference between GBA & DS. Pretty much a redesign with a generation update....

Basically Sony say one thing, and then say another and consumers are still left going

Well if they said outright "We are remodelling the PSP for this/next year" My PSP would be sold in a heartbeat and I would wait for the new model :D Maybe they don't want people doing that, or holding off to get one because they wanna wait a year for a new one.

Problem is they won't come outright and say such a thing, as it would hinder current PSP sales.
Don't expect a PSP2 anytime soon, and a PSP "lite" could be around the corner, but it will be as expensive(if not a little more) than the current PSP.
Although I don't predict we'll see one for at least another year.....PSOne and PSTwo were 3-4 years after initial launch.
PSP is 2 years old this month(in NA)

You can try looking on TigerDirect or NewEgg or something along those lines for a refurbished one. They are in really good condition and I got mine around christmas time for $150 which is the lowest you can get one I think. It didn't come with e memory card though but you can get one for a good deal on the same sites mentioned. eBay also has deals on the PSP's but usually not refurbished ones only the ones that come in the packs so it will be a bit more pricey. If you wanted to go the eBay route get one of the earlier firmware version ones in case you want to run homebrew (do some research before hand on how to identify one though).

Agree, lol. They need to do some work there. I'm looking into getting the Metal Slug Anthology in the near future. Thats a cool series and with all the games together it's a good deal. I wonder why there aren't many games since the system has been out for a while?

Shame they're no good, else the PSP would have sold more than the DS. I mean, Playstation Portable, I bought the 2 GTA PSP games for PS2 for half the price of one PSP game. No logic at all.

^That doesn't work anymore....PSP has more than enough good to great game.

I would say the PSP and DS stink collection are almost the same now.

A cheaper Portable with cheaper Games from a company that DOMINATES the handheld market should have been outsold by the newcomer.........interesting theory.

Can we use this with the Wii? A cheaper console with cheaper games?

Sony is not a newcomer to home-consoles and we don't have two years of solid numbers form either console yet....that means no. ;)
We can talk in two years though.

Yes, yes it does still work. The PSP GTA games are still full whack in shops here, their PS2 ports are £9-15. Until the PSP price drops to the same it will never be the same. Until they fix the PSPs flaws it wont be the same. I can't believe I wanted that system so much and ended up losing money selling it on again :(

Ah okay then, so you need to remove the price points you made from your first argument if they're now worthless.

Not really......they are drastically different markets, with drastically different variables.

    • Neither Nintedo, nor Sony are NEWCOMERS to the Home-Console market this gen.
    • Launch sales figures are nowhere near proof enough to predict 2 years worth of sales trends.
    • Games are much closer priced in the Home-Console industry(vs. Handheld)

We could have used this argument against Microsoft last gen.....the newcomer with a more expensive console got beat.

I would have bought a PSP, but I already have plenty of other devices that are good at collecting dust. :)

    (Sony PSP - Sony Music) + games = attractive;

Sony could swap out the screen on the PSP at least and keep it the same cost, since that tech has come down as expected. But that probably won't happen util the unit picks up some more sales, since the PSP probably has not been profitable for Sony?

They've sold close to(if not a tad more than) 20 million units globally, I'd say they are close ot making profit, and we are close to seeing a price drop(or possibly a "lite" model)

The purchase of a PS3 will be the reason I finally buy a PSP. They do need to revamp a few areas though, even if they don't redesign it. They really need to address the load times. I know that will be a non issues if I'm playing one game, but that's not always the case.

I'm personally a huge fan of portables in general and prior to owning my Sony Clié and then buying some of their newer headphones(garbage), I had really no dislike of Sony at all. I actually figured they would be better for music. I have mostly Sony products in my house. But because they were so misleading with their newer products and subjected me to the most horrific software in the history of mankind, SonicStage, the thought of a PSP made me cringe. The bundle they offered up front further swayed me from a purchase and then everything I had suspected about how Sony would cripple some aspects of music and video playback turned out to be correct. (I know they later addressed some of these issues.) They were essentially repeating their mistakes from the Clié and it all stems from their assine music devision. Now when I see PSP adds, it's not about gaming, it's about sharing. Bleh, I buy portable game machines to play games.

the picture above is very accurate!

they need to come out w/ some games before they redisign the system. The games I bought the system for are not out yet, and I bought it at midnight on release day!

I'm speaking of Gran Turiusmo and FFVII Crisis Core
