Agree with BigRell486 and have talked to a number of Apple salespeople on the topic. They're in it to get you the right product that meets your needs for the right price.
At the extreme of this, my daughter was in grad school, needed to replace a windows laptop lingering on death with a Mac and knew from me (via MacRumors) that an MBP update was imminent. She went into the store in San Diego, expressed her needs and her concern about a new update.
The salesperson told her "Come back tomorrow", at which time the new update was on the shelves.
Cool guy and a straight shooter!
