"Having sex is a basic human need like eating and drinking."

Not by any stretch of the imagination... however, I see no harm in this.

    I think that quote is just broken english/poor translation. IN context my reading is that she's saying that it's a basic human right that the disabled should be able to have sex, and that it shouldn't be withheld from them due to cultural taboos;

I have a couple of friends who are disabled, from moderate to severe, and I'm not sure how I feel about this.

i wear glasses does that count as disabled?????

lol i dont think its a cultural taboo but more along the lines most people looking for a relationship value the physical part and if that cant be met, it may pose a problem for the couple

i dont know about you, but the women i date tend to enjoy my activities which means being healthy aka snowboarding, hiking, etc. i would have a hard hard hard time dating someone disabled to the point i could never do the things i like with her. i would imagine most people are same way

    maybe thats just me

No, it isn't. Kinda the issue here. But you'd be surprised how little it really matters most of the time. We go out clubs and concerts and other things all the time, and the wheelchair(s) seldom really get in the way. And I'll tell you, going to Disneyland is a completely different experience. In a good way.

I agree. I think it should mean a basic right.

Can't really sum up how I feel about this because my thoughts are all over the place -yeah, everyone should be able to have sex - I can't imagine the people paying for it are severely disabled - Should they have to pay for it? Overall, I'm tending to think it's a good thing, but there's some little part of me that's just a little unsettled with the idea.

This has the potential for some shady things, such as abuse. I worry about the sorts of people who would volunteer as well as the state of mind of the disabled person. (yeah, how disabled is disabled?)

It kind of creeps me out.

There is a group in the Netherlands that provides this service. From the people I heard speaking about it they have all the necessary checks and protections in place to assure safety to both parties. I've heard disabled people who previously had not had the opportunity to have a sexual relationship say how it had changed and enhanced their lives greatly. These were people from the UK who travelled to Holland to avail themselves of the service because nothing similar is available in the UK.( in fact some couples require a nurse to be in attendance to help with physical difficulties).

Most of the physically disabled people I know are perfectly mentally stable, but get as lonely as the rest of us.

I also know a fair amount of people who will have sex with pretty much anyone, anytime, especially if there's money involved.

I <3 the Netherlands, seriously. There are times when I think everywhere could take a page from their book.
They've had what most places consider to be big taboos for a long time with very little in the way of problems with it.
This is my pro-prostitution and pro-pot post of the day. :p

It's a good test project if you think about it. We let prisoners who have killed, raped, stolen, etc, have sex, and yet for some reason an innocent person who happens to have a condition is expected to grin and bear it? Please. I hope the program is successful enough to be expanded. Disabled people everywhere deserve it.

Indeed – I remember seeing a programme about it quite a few years back. It featured a chap in a wheelchair who could only speak through a voice synthesiser (I can't recall his exact disability as it was quite a while ago) who was desperate to experience what it was like to have sex, and eventually he organised a trip to the Netherlands so he could lose his virginity with a lady who specialised in such matters.

It was quite an interesting and thought-provoking programme, only ruined by him performing a bizarre disco-style song about sex at the end of the show.

Me too - it's such a shame that the U.S. is going through its "fascist" stage of growth as a country. The Feds would be all over something like this, if not just for the sake of making an "easy kill" that nets the government some cash in fines for breaking the law but because our vice cops don't have the best reputation for adhering to the law themselves. Heck, look what the Feds are doing the pot clubs here in Oakland - they're legal in the State of California, so the Feds are going after them like shooting fish in a barrel.

You know, they are really just people like anyone else. ;) I actually have a friend in a wheelchair who's kinda hot. She seems like she'd be the crazy type though, and no more of that for me.

I was helping another friend who's in the severely disabled category fix her computer once and saw a bunch of dirty pics. Like, really dirty pics. Guys and girls. And... other. But hey, just because she's in a wheelchair doesn't mean she can't be a perv. Which she totally is. Hey, everybody needs some lovin'.

I'm not sure there were any deaf people in this group.
