Im about to host a party and am looking for a good theme.
Its a uni crowd.... so we tend to be very sophisticated in our choice of themes:

    e.g.
    Rubix Cube Theme
    Toga Party
    Disco Theme

Im looking for some good classic themes that can be used. What themes have u found succesful?

Have people dress up as their favorite movie or song and let people guess what others are dressed up as.

Or have a Mac party. :)

Colour can be interesting - everyone must have one yellow and one purple item of clothing for example...

A friend of mine does 'dinner parties of the world' with some of her pals. Each month, one of them hosts a meal and as the theme suggests they are working their way round the world. Rather than geographically, they're doing them alphabetically - the guests wear something related to the country, they cook recipes/ingredients from it and listen to, at least some, music from it.

It can be very interesting if you're unlucky enough to get Qatar!

    Me jest? Never.

To go into more detail about the rubix cube theme. Everyone has to turn up in the colours of a rubix cube.... multicoloured. By the end of the night they have to be dressed in one single colour.

    A party of opposites...

A friend of mine wa invited for a party where he had to dress up as a dog and meet a stranger dressed up as a cat at a bar and then they should acompany eachother to the party. I always thought that was a great though pretty ambitious theme...

Do they know which the final single colour will be before the end of the party? Or are you kind and allow people to choose what their single colour will be? :D

It can be fun to search on the internet and just see what's going on around the world on that particular day and co-opt it. However, you may end up with, as I recently did, that the most interesting thing about the day is that it is the 54th annaversary of the nationalization of Iran's oil industry.

    "Used to be Cool"

You can come as people or things thaat used to be cool. Not too strict a theme so as to freak people out with having to find difficult stuff. Easy to get music that used to be cool. I've been to one of these and it rocked.

    Ask Mymemory about sofisticated themes...

I am working in a production company and that is actually the service we offer so:

    1. Barbarella's Attack: that is based on the movie when a bunch of girls come from another planet with old fashion lazer guns taking over men.

    2. Helmut Newton: That is a bunch of girls dressed with corsets wiping men as well, playing a lots of fetishes rolls.

    3. Heavenly: Everybody dressed like kinky angels and cupids.

    4. Chinese Zodiac: Dress like each animal.

Those are a few themes. I will place some videos this week in my web site www.vjrei.com

    I've got a good one

This is one of the best I've heard of. It would be especially awesome if you really knew the people that are coming to your party. So here it is.......

    10 Year Reunion :)

Everyone dresses up like how they think they will look in 10 years, and acts how they think they will act in 10 years!

This probably only works well with younger groups, like high-school and college, as most people change a lot in the following 10 years. But if you're a group of 40 or 50 yr-olds, it might not be that dramatic :p

How about an Opposite Sex theme, where people who normally dress as a male dress as a female, and vice versa. At the very least, the walk across campus both to and from ought to be memorable.

Don't know how old you are, but we had an 80's party which was a blast. (Everyone at the party had grown up in the 80s) Everyone dressed up in 80s clothes. (Some people came as famous people Prince or Don Johnson from Miami Vice) Others just dressed as they had in high school (the prep look, goth, punk, etc.) Three girls actually wore their 80s prom dresses. All the music was from the 80s.

This could work for the 60s or 70s also.

    Anywho, just an idea.

the most recent themed party i went to was a letter party. a letter was chosen, and everyone had to dress up like something beginning with that letter. in this case, it was "P," so we had such costumes as...
    peppermint
    pornstar/playboy bunny
    polar bear
    prospie (prospective student)
    penguin
    princess
    etc...

it was great, though, because when the cops came to bust the party, we invited them in. after all, they met the requirements being dressed as police.

Where I come from, Pirates vs. Ninjas are the party themes; with guests dressing as their favorite. It's not uncommon for swords to show up at the party... kinda gotta be careful if there's alcohol though.

    swords + alcohol != good
