GPS proximity alarm app?

Hello all. I've been trying to find a basic app that will allow me to simply put in a location and have it wake me up when I get within a certain distance. I'm aware that there's a number of apps in the app store that claim to do this, and I've tried many of them .... some free and some paid but none really seem to work as they claim they do. Maybe the iPhone has to be unlocked and have that particular app open for it to work effectively .... I'm not sure. I'd like to find one that just runs in the background and wakes me up. It sounds simple enough but I haven't had any luck. Has anyone here found one that would fit the bill?

Technically speaking the built in Reminders app should be able to do it.

I tried that yesterday but only got a visual reminder on the screen. Is it supposed to do an audio as well?

It should work as pretty much any other notification and have an audible/vibrate alert for it as well. You might want to check notification settings for Reminders in the Settings app.
