Ok, So I got my macbook today. I ordered on Tuesday Morning, and my black macbook came this evening (thursday, stock options only).

When I opened my box I notced that my track pad was scratched up, there were oily smudges on the lid, and my screen has dead pixels.

Has anyone been presented with this? I am going to call apple tomorrow and demand a new unit. I feel like I have just been ripped off!

Never heard of this one before lol. My macbook came brand new and shiny. Not a scratch or smudge. You should definitely call apple right away and declare it DoA and demand they immediately ship you a new one without waiting for you to return this one, you deserve it.

You have every right to be mad and demand a new unit. I understand when people receive units that suffer from internal component failures - you just can't QC every unit's innards. But when someone receives a product that has obviously been used, dropped, kicked around a football pitch etc. it gets me angry.

Ring Apple tomorrow, be calm but firm - they're more likely to respond to you in a positive manner if you are nice than if you get on the phone and start ranting. Be calm, polite but don't let them run over you - you paid for a new machine and you should not have received a unit in such bad condition. Tell them it's your first Mac, how you are really looking forward to using the computer but that you were unhappy to see the condition of the unit when it arrived and ask what they can do to remedy the situation. Be polite and be calm, I can't stress that enough.

I feel the same way. This was my first mac! Ive used a PC ever since the MS DOS 5 days! All my friends in medical school suggested that I get a Mac for school and I gave in, and some how I feel not happy right now. I want to feel happy, but im not. Ugh, I just feel so frustrated right now.

Chundles, Thanks for the good pep talk! I feel so much better knowing that there are Mac users out there who understand this type of pain. Chundles your posts are great and very useful. My friend in college right now, hes an informatics department has bought 4 MBP's and had all of them returned because they were terrible... (similar to my situation, only with a MBP). Ive owned 4 dells, 1 AST, and 1 IBM and I have never had a problem like this ever. But Yes, I will be polite, calm, yet firm on the phone. After all I expect to get a perfect machine when I have paid good $ for it! :) Thanks for the support. I am glad to know Macrumors users are very nice!

Yeup, my first MacBook (white) had dead pixels and the keyboard had bits on it which I had to wipe away. It generally just felt old. So I know how you feel. You should definately demand a new unit! That's what I did and I'm on my 3rd now - ordered on Monday morning and will be arriving a week today... (damn slow delivery to the UK at the moment!!!)
