I've just bought a new macbook with a 60 gb hard drive. I haven't installed anything yet other than transferring a couple of hundred songs in iTunes (about 1gb) and some photos (about 40mb).

My question, which is probably a really stupid one (you'll have to excuse me, being a mac virgin!) is 'Why am I being told that I only have 35gb of free space on my hard drive?'

Surely the apps that come bundled with the macbook dont take up the best part of 20gb, or do they?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, if you install the full complement of OS X features (language support, print drivers) + all the iLife 06 apps (particularly audio loops in Garageband and iDVD themes) you can approach 20 gigs. Also, remember that 60GB is not the actual size of the drive, once formatting and 1024 vs. 1000 definitions of kbit are taken into account.

You can use a program called 'WhatSize' to see exactly what programs/files are taking up space on your HD.

Welcome to MR, by the way. :)
